Riot Games has announced the closure of Hypixel Studios, the developer behind the long-anticipated Minecraft-inspired sandbox game Hytale. The decision, described as "painful" by CEO Aaron Donaghey (Noxy), comes after nearly a decade of development struggles. Hypixel Studios will wind down operations over the next few months.
Founded in 2015 by creators of a popular Minecraft server network, Hypixel Studios gained early traction with a 2018 Hytale trailer that amassed 60 million views. Riot Games acquired the studio in 2020, but ultimately concluded the project couldn't deliver on its original vision. "We explored every possible path," Noxy stated, acknowledging the team's efforts to salvage the ambitious voxel-based RPG.
